Tips on Running to Lose Weight

by: Todd Butcher

Running is an excellent way to tone the body, increase your metabolism and lose weight. Running to lose weight will help you to produce a cardiovascular workout that improves the function of the heart and strengthens and tones your lower body muscles. As you run your body will naturally shed unwanted pounds. Some people take up running to loose weight as it can burn calories very quickly. This makes sense as a 150 pound person will burn hundreds of calories an hour while running plus the increase in metabolism will help you to burn calories during the day at an increased rate. If you have been thinking about running to reduce your weight there are some things to think about before you get started.

Jogging benefits the body as does all exercise. When you run or exercise you increase your metabolism or processing of food. This will not only help you while you are exercising it can help you through out the day and even while you sleep. When people focus on running to lose weight their main goal is to process food efficiently so that it does not convert to fat. Running is a premium way of doing this. Running offers more cardiovascular help than merely going to the gym and lifting weights. Many people like to run as it is more scenic and interesting that sitting in a gym. Because you choose your running environment you can run in an area that is interesting with plenty of scenery or even run to work.

Some people worry about running to lose weight as it can put stress on the knees and joints. This is more true for those who are overweight than it is for those that are in shape. If you wear quality running shoes you will find that these problems are not really a concern. The cushioning in newer shoes absorbs most of the shock. Besides once you begin running, the muscles, ligaments and bone density will be strengthened to the point of resisting any additional shock. Running is a great way to increase the body’s overall condition not only skeletally but in a cardiovascular condition. One important thing to learn is that if you are going to start running, make sure to get a shoe that will allow you to run without feeling the shock of the road.

Enjoy Running to Lose Weight

Many people who take up running stick with it for years as it is an enjoyable way to exercise and keep in shape. If you are a runner you will have more freedom in eating as you will burn food quickly. You will also be able to sleep better at night. As long as you do not overdo it, you will feel an overall sense of well being as you run from month to month. The body produces an increased amount of endorphins with exercise that create a sense of relaxation and clarity of mind. If you are running to lose weight, plan out your route and get some well cushioned shoes. Running will help you to greatly benefit your health, build muscles and lose unwanted fat. What more could you ask for.

Consuming Healthy Foods For Weight Loss With Little Money

By Lori Finney

A mistaken belief in regards to eating healthy products such as organic, fresh veggies and fruits is these items are costly. Most individuals consume more junk food items than what they need. While eating healthy to lose weight may seem expensive in the beginning, people must realize healthier food items supply additional advantages as well. Healthier food items generally cause a body to desire less amounts of food items throughout the day. Whenever less amounts of products are eaten, then less money is spent.

A body needs protein to assist with cell restoration as well as furnish energy so that the body runs properly. Eating foods like cow meat and fish provide dietary protein. However, consuming too much dietary protein leads to weight gain since a body tries to store excess protein as cellulite for future use. Even worse, consuming too much protein is linked to illnesses including diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer. Because red meat and fish are costly, consuming smaller portions may assist in losing excessive weight and reduce possibility for these medical problems.

Money saving alternatives to beef and fish are legumes and beans. These two items possess minerals, protein, fiber, vitamins and antioxidants a body must have. Canned or bagged beans and legumes are cheap to purchase. These kinds of items can very easily mix into soups, salads, dips and stews. Best of all, both these products have little or no poisonous mercury or saturated fat, whereas red meat and fish usually possess those horrible items. When eating healthy to lose weight including legumes and beans in place of red meat and fish are inexpensive options.

Consuming healthy food products such as fresh, organic vegetables and fruits provides minerals, fiber, vitamins and antioxidants the body requires. When the human body gets appropriate amounts of those substances, the body will decrease excessive body weight quicker as well as lower chance for medical conditions. Suffering from fewer medical conditions contributes to paying a lot less on medical costs. This situation can be one more benefit for eating more nutritious food items.

Chips, white bread and cookies generally are made with enriched, processed or refined flour. This kind of flour has simple carbs. Monosaccharide or simple carbohydrates digest quickly meaning more products will be eaten all day long. Such foods possess little or no nutrition.

Cookies, chips and white bread usually possess fructose, sucrose or corn sugar. This variety of refined or processed sugar also is filled with simple carbs. These foods contain no or little nutritional value.

Using a couple examples like chips, white bread and cookies, which are made with processed ingredients, reveals consuming healthier foods may be economical options when considering the additional food products consumed and increased medical health costs because of experiencing additional health problems. Fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes contain nutrients the human body must have. Processed, refined or enriched flour and refined or processed sugar do not. Whenever eating healthy to lose weight incorporating additional organic items might help economically.

Binge Eating Disorder And Depression: Do They Go Hand-In-Hand?

By Kristin Gerstley

It’s hard to imagine that there are people out there who won’t eat an entire row of cookies, or hear food calling to them in the middle of the night; people who never have to throw their food out to avoid eating it, or pick it out of the garbage in desperation. Binge eating is of course only a cover-up for a much bigger issue, the emptiness one feels inside.

If one feels empty, the feeling of depression occurs and so does binge eating. Compulsive eating is eating large amounts of food in a short span of time while Depression on the other hand is a serious condition that can affect all aspect of one’s life. Binging puts the victim in a spot where he/she cannot control eating, which will later on gives the feeling of guilt for over eating. Psychological and emotional factors, such as the feeling of depression occurs, this proves the link of emotional eating and depression.

According to researches, there is a straight correlation between compulsive eating and depression. Some argue that depression caused binge eating, as most victims gets worst in binging when they are depressed, stressed out or if they keep any negative feelings inside. Some says the opposite and blames “over eating” or binging for being depressed. However, there is no clear explanation as to whether binge eating leads to depression or depression stimulates binge eating.

In the United States alone, Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is affecting 3.5 percent of females and 2 percent of males and 30 percent of those seeking to lose weight. In a recent study, researchers investigated the link between binge eating and depression in the early age of adolescence. A soaring 1.7 percent rate found prevalent for eating disorders in teens.

Studies showed a great risk for binging for young girls when they feel “depressed” or “down in the dumps”. Most common reasons are teasing coming from the opposite sex or family members. As for boys, they become less resilient to constant comments about weight from peers and family members.

A study also proved that young girls have higher risk of having emotional eating and depression than boys. Is it because teen girls face more challenges than boys do? Girls faced in dealing with more than one stressor simultaneously as compared to boys. Some common stressors include:

Body image: Girls are more concerned about physical appearance than boys do during adolescence.

Transition: Both face changes during puberty but girls find it more difficult to transition than boys do. Example of which is transitioning to middle school or junior high.

Worthlessness: Girls feels less important or less to succeed in life than boys do. Discrimination based on gender and sexual preference in terms of opportunities in life. Their self-esteem is greatly affected, which leads them to feel depress and over eat.

Sexuality: Girls are stuck with the traditional double standard, by which females were judge harshly than males. Teenage girls would shy away from expressing their sexual desires and preferences for the fear of rejection and judgment. Girls are more prone to judge themselves negatively than boys do. Teenage boys on the other hand are more vocal in expressing their actions and ideas. When faced with rejection, they become depressed but they can easily brush off negativity off their shoulders and move on.

Binge eating and depression goes hand and hand.

Depressive symptoms and negative emotions are to consider in preventing binge eating. Binge eaters are mostly secretive and in denial. Parents, friends and even doctors should be aware in checking these signs of disordered eating and vice versa.

Simple Steps to Prevent Childhood Obesity

By KC Wheeler

There are simple factors in every parent’s control that can reduce the chance of childhood obesity. In society today, approximately one in five children will be labeled as obese. Obesity is defined as an excess amount of body fat, measured as a percentage of total body weight. A child is considered obese when their body weight is 20% higher than the average weight of children of the same age. It is imperative that parents realize how their choices impact the chances of their children developing obesity.

The main contributing factors to childhood obesity are lack of physical activity and high calorie intake, as well as the variety of foods consumed. The recent emphasis on technology as well as convenience, high calorie meals have had a detrimental effect on child health. Furthermore, one of the worst physical effects of childhood obesity is the susceptibility to diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and early onset of heart disease.

Obesity has negative effects on emotional health as well. Society today labels those that are obese as lazy or unmotivated. These stigmas contribute to the increasing onset of depression, anxiety, and low self esteem in children. These factors then affect the social health of children as well, as there can be a lack in the development of relationships and acceptance from their peers.

In this technological age, it is easy for children to develop a lack of physical activity. Both computer usages as well as the increase in video gaming systems are the major technological factors in childhood obesity. It is easy for parents to use these as ways to keep their children busy. While there have been recent advancements in gaming that involve total body interaction, the comparison of these games to actual physical activity such as sports or dancing shows a minimal amount of calories burned. The largest impact that parents can have on these factors is managing the amount of time spent on all screens within the home, forcing children to find alternative methods of entertainment.

Parents do have control over several factors that contribute to obesity. The eating habits of children can be controlled, as parents need to resist the urge to provide the quick, convenience meals such as fast food and high-calorie, low nutritional snacks. A higher consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains may reduce the risk of obesity in children. Parents should provide healthy beverages to their children as well, such as reduced sugar juices, skim milk, and water, as opposed to high sugar liquids such as carbonated soda pops and sugar-based beverage mixes.

Parents can also provide a variety of physical activities for youngsters. A creative mind can create unique activities that require participation and motion. Some examples of such activities are outdoor play, such as games like tag or hide and seeks, and indoor play such as fort-building, balloon play, or dancing to upbeat music.

A parents control over meal choices, activities, and daily routine may be the solution to the widespread childhood obesity seen within society today.

The Simplest Ways to Naturally Burn Belly Fat and Flatten Your Stomach

By Laurie Sawatsky

Every day, there is bound to be someone who will try to convince you that there are new and miraculous ways to burn belly fat, cut belly fat, or flatten your stomach. It’s true, there are a lot out there. Between fad diets, potentially dangerous supplements, and drastic plastic surgery, there are really thousands of ways to lose and keep weight off. There are, however, two very basic and easy methods of getting rid of fat and keeping it off: eating less and exercising more.

This article will outline a few ways in which you can ensure that your body can boost its ability to burn calories, whether or not you are active. These methods ensure that you will be able to burn that belly fat and get the flattened stomach that you want.

More Green Tea!

The powerful anti-oxidants in green tea have been determined to possess health benefits including lowering the risk of heart disease, cancer, and kidney stones and improving LDL cholesterol and arthritis. Scientists have also discovered that green tea delivers a massive metabolic boost that allows you to burn up to 4% more calories ensuring that you can cut belly fat rapidly. In addition to that, green tea also acts as a natural immune booster!

Eat Smaller Meals, More Frequently!

As children, we were taught that three square meals a day was the right intake. Recently, it has been discovered that eating 5-6 smaller meals a day is better for spreading out the energy that we need to last us through the day. Eating more frequently will also keep the metabolism boosted, ensuring that our bodies are always working and burning belly fat.

Cold Water is Good!

It’s common knowledge that water is good for our bodies. In addition to being a natural appetite suppressant, an intake of water ensures that the body is always hydrated and running on a faster metabolism. What we didn’t know was that cold water is even better! Drinking colder water means our bodies burn energy to get the water’s temperature equal to our body temperature. When we use energy, we burn calories. When we burn calories, we lose fat and flatten our stomachs.

More Movement, More Activity!

The simple act of lifting weights a couple of times a week can lead to an increase in muscle mass. This is important because muscle burns more calories than fat. An additional cardio routine, done earlier in the day, will create massive metabolic momentum. Our bodies will burn more calories throughout the day making sure that the belly fat will come off, whether at work or rest.

Weight loss doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, it’s seriously simple. By turning up the metabolic rate, the body burns calories around the clock. Adding any one of these steps can boost the resting metabolism, cut belly fat, and aid weight loss. A way to burn belly fat is here! More green tea! Cold water is good! More movement! Smaller meals! This is the best way to flatten your stomach.

Helping Your Child To Overcome Being Overweight

By Olayinka A Oni

It is no longer news that a lot of our children are becoming overweight. The sedentary life style we live has eaten very deep into the fabric of our daily lives no thanks to technological advancement. Gone are the days when children looked forward to going to the park to run around and have fun. Those days have sadly been replaced by endless hours of sitting in front of video games, TV and computers. We have every cause to worry because many of our overweight kids will grow up into obese and overweight adults, with higher risk to life threatening and limiting diseases leading to reduction in their life expectancy. Already statistics have shown that over 17% of children in the Western world are overweight. This frightening trend didn’t just happen overnight but occurred due to our own new way of life which our children have copied from us. The pressure of work and trying to make ends meet has kept most parents almost at their duty posts for long hours everyday leaving very little time to supervise their children’s activities. Thus a lot of our children suffer neglect. Eating out has become the new way of dining relegating cooking of family dinner to the background.

Our children have developed an insatiable craving for sugar filled foods and fizzy drinks which is becoming uncontrollable. Getting your children to quit playing video games or spending time online is considered almost impossible. Instead of trying to eliminate what you consider to be a bad influence, offer alternatives to video games and television that are fun. These alternatives could be as simple as taking the dog out for a walk in the park or at times sending the child on an errand to a convenience store down the street. Another important thing to consider when helping a child lose weight is their diet. Once again it’s going to be impossible to cut out all of their sweets and other unhealthy foods. Instead of trying to impose a healthy diet upon them, you can look for healthy foods that they enjoy. Convince them of the need to eat more fruits instead of sweets and chocolate. By providing your child with options instead of trying to force them to eat healthy, you can increase the chances that they will improve their eating habits.

The key to helping a child lose weight is learning to effectively communicate with your child and finding middle ground. Instead of trying to force change upon them, try to encourage them to want to change. Weight loss can be quite challenging and difficult for anyone and trying to get a child to understand that they need to lose weight is no exception. But by offering them alternatives and solutions instead of focusing upon their shortcomings, you can make their weight loss something that is positive. There will be setbacks and things may become difficult. But by remaining positive, by focusing upon a solution, you can help your child to lose weight and live a healthier life. Is Green Tea Weight Loss Right For You?

By James Dooley

There is a thousand years worth of empirical data and at least a decade’s worth of scientific research that fully supports a wide range of health claims regarding the benefits of drinking green tea. Green tea is very similar to black and white teas. The main difference, however, is in how each kind of tea is processed. Unlike other teas that lose a lot of their health benefits through a fermentation processing method, these tea leaves are steamed and withered, allowing them to retain a greater concentration of antioxidants called catechins. It is these catechins that set this tea apart from all others and makes it a superior health (and weight loss) product.

Thousands of years of historical observation and recent scientific studies appear to show strong evidence that drinking this type of tea lowers cholesterol and prevents (or at least deters) some forms of cancer. This evidence has shown that it helps reduce blood clots; helps prevent atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries); helps to prevent heart disease and; helps to prevent diabetes.

It is the weight loss benefits of the tea, however, that is the subject of this article. Although people have been drinking this form of tea for more than a thousand years, it is only recently that a connection has been made between its consumption and losing weight. If you have any doubt that the connection has now been firmly made, just do an internet search and look at all the products containing green tea extracts that are now on the market. Not only that but there are thousands of web pages touting people’s personal weight loss success using the tea.

There have been studies done in Europe and in the Orient that have shown clear evidence that drinking the tea or taking a supplement containing a concentrated form of the extract from the tea causes weight loss. The European study showed that those who drank the tea lost more than those who dieted without the tea and they came to the conclusion that the antioxidants in the tea caused an increase in fat oxidation (it increased the burning off of fat cells). The Japanese study also showed that the extracts from the tea were directly related to fat loss as, in that study, those who took the highest amount of the extract lost the most weight, had the greatest improvement in their cholesterol levels and saw their blood pressure reduced.

Empirical data (stories told by people like you and me) show that drinking this form of tea (or taking a supplement containing an extract from the tea) is almost a miracle drug as far as losing weight is concerned. Of course any time you rely on what someone else tells you a healthy dose of cynicism is needed but there are just far too many people claiming great diet benefits for them all to be bogus. Again, do a web search or visit some diet related forums and decide for yourself.

If you are looking to lose weight or you are already on a weight loss program but you want to boost that plan, try adding a couple of cups of the tea a day and see what happens. At the very least, scientific data says that you will be healthier for it. At best, you will become another proponent of drinking green tea for weight loss.

Consider Food Coaching for Healthy Eating Tips

Consider Food Coaching for Healthy Eating Tips
By Vianesa R Vargas

For many people with busy schedules, one of the most important things that go by the wayside is a healthy eating plan. The food habits that busy professionals had in college do not translate well into the real world, and therefore these high-performing people may find themselves several pounds heavier than just 10 years ago, brought upon by a lifestyle of fast food, caffeine overload, and little exercise. These things are inevitable, and defined by the kind of food that is taken in, the kind of healthy habits that are cultivated and making sure there is a plan that works for the lifestyle one has. Does this sound like you?

A smart way to begin is to hire a food coach that can help you succeed. Not only do food coaches provide food tips, there is no pressure to begin fad diets, or spend an excessive amount of money on your food bill. Food coaches are well experienced in food and can help you with a healthy weight loss food plan that won’t cramp your lifestyle.

Many food coaches are also certified nutritionists who understand the intricacies of a well balanced diet which can fulfill the nutrition requirements of an individual at any point of time. Look for one that is certified by a reputable body, has a marketing and/or communication background, and has a strong background in science. This combination ensures that you will be coached by someone who understands the sometimes confusing food industry, and can also lead you to better health.

There can be instances and circumstances where the client is suffering from a lack of time, and wishes to take the help of a food consultant who can offer an appropriate healthy eating diet plan – one that is delicious as well as healthy. These are experienced individuals who are noted for their great expertise in the kitchen as well as the ability to help clients save time and money.

Furthermore, a good food coach is also familiar with options available when clients are not able to cook and need to get food at a restaurant. A strong food coach can also help with restaurant consulting. With the conflicting guidance that exists, and the responsibilities and areas of improvement to be worked upon, one doesn’t always have the time or patience to critique menus. Let a food coach be your guide so that all you have to do is enjoy your food and take care of your busy schedule.

Healthy Ways to Lose Weight After Pregnancy

How to Lose Weight After Pregnancy

Don't Fret the Baby Fat!

by Cyndi Waters

Congratulations! You’ve just become a new mother! For nine months, you didn’t worry about how much you ate or how many pounds you put on. After all, you were eating for two. Thoughts about losing weight after pregnancy were shoved into the back of your mind. You secretly hoped that the “baby fat” would magically disappear once you gave birth.

As you study your body, you realize with dismay that you will have to continue to wear those maternity clothes awhile longer. No way will you fit into your regular clothes! As a matter of fact, you still look several months pregnant! Oh, how you long for your old body…the one you had BEFORE pregnancy!

Don’t fret! Don’t set your expectations too high! It took nine months to gain those pounds and, realistically, you should give yourself at least that long to lose the extra weight.

Remember, too, that your body has been working since you gave birth to return to its pre-pregnancy state. Through the help of continued uterine contractions, your belly will lose much of its still-pregnant look over the course of the next few weeks. Excess fluids that remain from your pregnancy will also gradually be expelled by your body. You may discover a month or two down the road that you have already lost several pounds and are beginning to look like your old self again!

Suggestions for Healthy Weight-loss after Pregnancy

Having a baby is hard work. The mother’s body needs adequate time to recuperate from the ordeal. Steps to lose the extra pounds that were gained during pregnancy should be taken slowly and under your doctor’s direction.

Below are some suggestions to help you achieve your weight-loss goals in a timely and healthy manner:

  • Avoid dieting! As a new mother, you need to eat to keep up your strength and energy level. As your body recuperates from childbirth, it needs to be properly nourished. Additionally, taking care of a newborn can be quite demanding and exhausting. You need enough calories to keep going and to stay healthy. This is especially true if you are a nursing mother. Realistically, a nursing mother needs an extra 500 calories a day to produce a sufficient supply of milk. Consuming too few calories could, in fact, result in your body retaining those extra pounds as a natural defense against perceived imminent starvation.
    .
  • Focus on healthy foods. Stay away from junk foods that are high in “empty” calories and fat. Eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Lean meats, fish, chicken, and beans are great sources of protein. Don’t forget the milk and yogurt for your calcium needs! If you’re unsure about the best food choices and portions, refer to the U.S.D.A. Food Pyramid as a guide to nutritious meals and snacks.
    .
  • Exercise is essential for weight-loss and good health! Nevertheless, don’t rush into heavy, strenuous exercise routines. Keep in mind that post-partum recuperation can take up to eight weeks. During that time, your body needs time to rest and heal. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, “if you exercised during pregnancy and had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, it’s generally safe to begin exercising within days of delivery-or as soon as you feel ready.” (But get your doctor’s approval, first!)
    .
  • Get plenty of sleep. Not only do you need plenty of sleep to keep up with the demands of motherhood, you need plenty of sleep to ensure normal regulation of hormones and metabolism. It may be difficult to get a good night’s sleep with a new baby in the house, so napping when the baby naps is a good rule to follow. David Rapoport, MD, director of the Sleep Medicine Program at the New York University School of Medicine, reports that “sleep and sleep disruption do remarkable things to the body-including possibly influencing our weight.” A June 11, 2009 article published on the research news website, www.sciencedaily.com, suggests that lack of sleep can actually lead to weight gain. Research conducted by the Associated Professional Sleep Societies indicates that sleep-deprived individuals tend to experience a decrease in appetite and eat less, even when food is readily available. “However, they gained weight over the course of the study.”
    .
  • Drink plenty of water. Water is necessary in all bodily functions, including metabolism. Keeping the body well-hydrated will help the body burn calories more efficiently and will make you feel more energetic. Drinking plenty of water will also give you a feeling of fullness, help prevent overeating, and aid in your weight-loss efforts.

Beginning an Exercise Program for Weight-loss and Good Health

If you haven’t been engaged in regular exercise for awhile, it’s even more important to get your doctor’s approval prior to beginning an exercise program. Once you’ve been given the “go ahead,” start out slowly and gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts as your strength and endurance improve.

Caring for a new baby takes some getting used to. Finding time to exercise may seem impossible at first, so it might be easier to break up the exercise sessions into several short segments. Even working out for 5 or 10 minutes at a time can help you get back into shape.

Walking is one of the best aerobic exercises and, perhaps, the easiest and most convenient to do with a baby. It is low-impact and can be done pretty much anywhere. You can take the baby along in a stroller or a baby carrier strapped to your body.

Aerobic exercises will help you burn calories and shed pounds, but you should also perform some resistance training to build strong muscles and bones. You don’t have to be a body builder. However, a few exercises with light weights can produce noticeable results.

Healthy weight-loss doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient with yourself and don’t set unrealistic goals. Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep, and exercise. Soon you’ll be back to your old self again!
